What “free” actually covers
Free tiers in this category are usually a demonstration. This one is not, and that is the main reason to consider it.
Individual use includes unlimited completion and chat rather than a monthly allowance that runs out in a week. For a student, a hobbyist, or a professional evaluating whether these tools suit them at all, that removes the decision entirely — there is no reason not to try it.
The commercial model is that individuals are free and teams and enterprises pay, with the paid tiers adding administration, self-hosting and support. That is a legitimate structure rather than a bait, and it has held for long enough to be relied on — though for any tool, “verify current terms” applies.
Editor coverage, which is its quiet advantage
Beyond VS Code and JetBrains it supports Neovim, Emacs, Eclipse, Sublime, Visual Studio and others.
That list matters more than it appears. Developers on Emacs or Eclipse are largely ignored by the newer tools — Cursor and Windsurf require changing editors entirely, and Cline is VS Code only. For those developers the practical choice is often Codeium or nothing, which makes a comparison against the strongest tools somewhat beside the point.
Codebase-aware search
You can ask where something is implemented in natural language and get the location, rather than guessing at the right grep.
This is most valuable in code you did not write — a new job, an inherited service, an open-source project you are contributing to. In a codebase you know well it saves little; in one you do not, it replaces the slowest part of getting oriented.
It is not equivalent to Cody‘s cross-repository retrieval, which operates at organisation scale. This is per-project and correspondingly simpler.
What the plugin is not
There is no agent here. Cascade — multi-file autonomous work — belongs to the Windsurf editor, not to the plugin.
This is the most common misunderstanding about the product, and it follows directly from the shared branding. Choosing Codeium means choosing assistance: completion, chat and search. If you want an agent that plans and executes across files, the options are the Windsurf editor, Cline, or Claude Code.
The naming, and why older writing is unreliable
Codeium the company became Windsurf. Windsurf was then acquired by Cognition in 2025, following a licensing arrangement involving Google.
Consequences for anyone researching this tool:
Documentation and community posts refer to both names, sometimes in the same thread, and mean different things by them depending on when they were written.
Comparison articles written before mid-2025 describe a company that no longer exists in that form, with pricing and plans that have since moved.
Verify the current plugin name, plan structure and terms directly. There is a live question of whether the plugin continues under the Codeium name or is fully absorbed into Windsurf branding, and the answer changes what you should even search for.
Self-hosting on enterprise plans
Enterprise deployments can run the models inside your own infrastructure, which puts Codeium in a small group alongside Tabnine for organisations that cannot send code to a hosted service.
The usual caveats apply: it is an infrastructure commitment with GPUs and maintenance attached, not a configuration setting, and the terms are negotiated rather than published.
What it asks of you
- One of the supported editors, plus the extension.
- An account. The individual tier is free; team and enterprise plans are paid.
- An internet connection for the hosted service, or your own infrastructure for self-hosted deployment.
- For self-hosting, real operational capacity.
Who it is genuinely aimed at
Individual developers, students and hobbyists who want competent assistance without a subscription. This is the honest first recommendation for anyone unsure whether AI coding tools suit them, because the cost of finding out is zero.
Developers on editors the market has abandoned — Emacs, Eclipse, Sublime — where the alternative is usually nothing.
Enterprises needing self-hosting with a more current feature set than the older self-hosted options provide.
Teams already using the Windsurf editor who want the plugin on secondary machines or for developers who prefer their own editor.
It is a weak fit for anyone who wants an agent, and for those who need the strongest available completion regardless of cost.
Why the free tier is the argument
- A free tier that does not expire and is sufficient for real individual work.
- The widest editor support in this category.
- Natural-language codebase search, most valuable in unfamiliar code.
- A self-hosting path that consumer-oriented assistants do not offer.
- No editor change required — install and continue.
What you are giving up
- No agent. Multi-step autonomous work means the Windsurf editor or a different tool.
- Confusing branding after the rename, with documentation referring to both names.
- Ownership changed in 2025, so plans and direction are less settled than the product’s age suggests.
- Completion quality is competitive, not leading — the free tier is the reason to choose it.
- Self-hosting is an enterprise commitment, not a checkbox.
- Per-project search rather than organisation-scale retrieval.
The cheapest exit in the category
Uninstall the extension. Nothing about your project depended on it, and your editor and settings are untouched.
This is the cheapest exit in the category and it cuts both ways — it is easy to leave because there was never much lock-in, which is also why trying it costs nothing but the install.
